Stars abound in Drakenstein’s CPYS draft

Drakenstein Stud have a diverse draft of ten yearlings (and one as agent) at next week’s Cape Premier Yearling Sale, due to be held at the CTICC on January 21st and 22nd.

The farm’s draft included yearlings by such outstanding sires as resident sires Philanthropist Trippi, as well as the likes of Captain Al, Silvano, and Var, as well asformer European champion Twice Over. Drakenstein Stud’s own first season sire and multiple champion sprinter What A Winter is represented in the draft.

Drakstein graduates of the Premier Yearling Sale have already tasted top level success, with the Drakenstein Stud bred Afrikaburn (a R900 000 buy from the 2013 sale) landing the G1 Durban Golden Horseshoe.
Excitingly, Drakenstein will offer a Captain Al half brother to Afrikaburn (Lot 148) –and this colt promises to be one of the sale’s highlights.

First of the Drakenstein Stud draft to fall under the hammer is lot 26, a colt by four time Group One winner and multiple European champion Twice Over. This colt, a half brother to 3 winners, is out of a stakes placed half sister to G1 Summer Cup winner Flirtation.

The Twice Over colt will be followed into the ring by lot 37, a colt by former champion sire Silvano, currently the leading sire by stakes in South Africa. This bay is a half brother to 3 winners including G2 winner and G1 Vodacom Durban July contender Halve The Deficit, while his G3 winning dam is a half sister to triple G1 winner and R3.7 million earner Smart Banker.

Silvano, whose offspring include 16 G1 winners, is also responsible for lot 57. This well bred filly, already named Ariana Grande, is a full sister to G1 SA Derby winner Seal, who earned over R2 million in prize money!

Twice Over, a dual winner of the G1 Champion Stakes, surely ranks as one of the best performed sires ever to retire directly to stud in South Africa. The champion is responsible for lot 80 –a colt, who is inbred to the mighty miler and great sire Blushing Groom. This colt is out of a Spectrum half sister to champion and G1 Cape Guineas winner Pointing North –from the family of G1 Computaform Sprint hero Rodoille and millionaire and sire Blue Tiger.

Resident sire Trippi, whose runners have earned over $50 000 000, is having another unbelievable run of success. Trippi, whose stars include the likes of Afrikaburn, For The Lads, Inara, R Heat Lightning and recent G1 Summer Cup runner up Deo Juvente, is also the sire of lot 88 –a colt out of the stakes placed Silver Apples. His second dam is a G3 winner –and she is also granddam of Triple Crown and Summer Cup hero Louis The King, recently retired to stud.

Lot 91 is a grey colt from the first of triple Equus Champion What A Winter, one of South Africa’s finest sprinters. A half brother to four winners, this colt’s half brother is none other than the Dubai based Derby winner Liquid Mercury and this is the family of the great miler and champion Mark Of Esteem.

Philanthropist was North America’s Leading Synthetics Sire in 2014, and the wonderful son of Kris S will have his first local runners this season. The chestnut wonder is also responsible for lot 114 –a colt out of a stakes placed full sister to the above mentioned Liquid Mercury. Inbred to the great Mr Prospector, this colt’s relatives include G1 winning 2yo Folk Art.

Reigning champion sire Captain Al has more than 30 G1 horses to his credit including champions All Is Secret, Captain Of All, and Captain’s Lover. The sire of former J&B Met hero Hill Fifty Four is the sire of lot 148 –the half brother to Afrikaburn. This colt’s third dam is G1 winning flying machine Sigy.

Lot 197 has been named after Dogwood Stable founder Cot Campbell –and this colt is certainly bred in the purple. By outstanding sire Trippi, sire of over 50 black type winners, he is the first foal of multiple G1 winner and Cape Fillies Guineas heroine Ebony Flyer. The latter, by champion sire Jet Master, is a half sister to another Fillies Guineas winning champion in the form of Captain’s Lover.

Trippi, whose offspring include G1 winners of both sexes, is also the sire of lot 243. This beautifully bred colt is out of a mare by triple US champion sire Giant’s Causeway (also damsire of champion Soft Falling Rain). He is from the great Peace family, responsible for G1 winners Byword, Continent, Proviso and Zambezi Sun –among many others.

Drakenstein also offer, as agent, lot 55 –a colt by outstanding sire Var, who had a yearling fetch R4 000 000 at this sale last year. This colt is out of a winning Jet Master half sister to G2 winning speedster Polar Moon and from the family of G1 winner Roxanne and former Horse Of The Year Legislate.
