Barbara Sanne’s Oldlands Stud has really enjoyed a great run over the past 12 months or so.
Not only has the nursery produced a number of high class gallopers, the Hemel ‘N Aarde based stud was responsible for a Var colt, named Moonrise Sensation, who fetched R4 million at this year’s Cape Premier Yearling Sale.
Among the recent graduates of Oldlands Stud are multiple feature race winner Cat And The Moon, Listed Somerset 1200m hero Tar Heel, and last season’s useful 2yo Sapsan. Other top class performers produced by the stud include former G1 SA Classic winner English Garden, G2 Fillies Guineas winner Go Indigo, top class Dubai winners Lucky Find and Sanshaawes, and millionaire Astro News.
Oldlands is also currently home to the only son of the legendary racehorse and sire Montjeu in the country.
The classic winning Stagelight shares his Arc de Triomphe winning sire with many outstanding racehorses and stallions including Tavistock, currently one of the hottest stallions standing in New Zealand.
The latter, a former Champion Sprinter himself, has made a sensational start to his stud career with his small first crops including the multiple G1 winner Volkstok’n’barrell, as well as eight other black type performers. Tavistock himself was named New Zealand Champion Second Season Sire in 2014-2015.
Stagelight and Tavistock’s sire Montjeu is one of the very finest sire sons of the mighty Sadler’s Wells. To date, the former champion and six time G1 winner has sired over 118 stakes winners with Montjeu’s runners including more than 30 individual G1 winners. His tally of stakes winners include no fewer than four Investec Derby winners –Motivator (sire of the great Treve), Authorized, Pour Moi and Camelet.
Himself winner of the G3 UAE 2000 Guineas, Stagelight was his mighty sire’s very first classic winner. He is also from a superb female line which continues to find favour with buyers around the world – at the recent Arqana August Yearling Sale, a colt from Stagelight’s immediate family fetched €700 000.
Sire of the smart fillies Margot On Stage and Nonki Poo, from very limited opportunities, Stagelight has some smashing foals to his credit this season.
Among the son of Montjeu’s foals on the ground are a pair of lovely fillies out of Outdoor Girl and Silver Forest. Outdoor Girl is a four time winning half sister to Listed Storm Bird Stakes winner Jimmi Choo, while Silver Forest is a beautifully bred daughter of champion sire Silvano who hails from the family of US G1 winner Crimson Palace.
Stagelight is also the sire of this imposing half-brother to the smart, stakes placed six time winner Tiger Play. The colt’s dam, Windspiel, is a winning daughter of the emerging broodmare sire Captain Al, whose daughters have already produced the G1 winners Potent Power (Tsogo Sun Medallion) and Same Jurisdiction (Thekwini Stakes, Garden Province Stakes).
Other eye catching foals born at Oldlands this season thus far are a lovely Querari filly (out of Star Of The Party), a Gitano Hernando colt (whose dam Full Regalia is a three time daughter of Captain Al), a beautiful Ashaawes colt out of Ginger Tree, and an Indigo Magic filly whose dam Vintage Award is from the same family as dual St Leger winner and hugely influential sire Niniski.
