Cape based exciting young sire Rock Of Rochelle is from the same family as one of North America’s top 3yos this year.  The latter, a son of turf champion English Channel, took his tally to four wins in just six outings when he won Saturday’s Gr1 Travers Stakes (worth US $1.25 million) over a star studded field.

V. E. Day is out of the Deputy Minister mare California Sunset and is from the same family as leading sires Brian’s Time and Dynaformer.

Another prominent stallion from this family is Offlee Wild (a full brother to the dam of Rock Of Rochelle), who is the sire of this year’s Gr1 Haskell Invitational winner, Bayern.

Both V.E. Day  and Rock Of Rochelle are descendants of the great Darby Dan tap root mare Golden Trail. The latter is the fourth dam of V. E. Day and fifth dam of Rock Of Rochelle. Other notable performers tracing back directly to Golden Trail include Kentucky Derby winner Monarchos, US Turf Champion Sunshine Forever, and the millionaires Winter Memories and Memories Of Silver.

A son of world leading sire Rock Of Gibraltar (also sire of leading young stallions Mount Nelson and Seventh Rock), Rock Of Rochelle was a talented sprinter, whose victories included the Group 3 Renaissance Stakes in Ireland.

His first yearlings really looked the part, and duly proved most popular, fetching up to R500 000 in 2014.

Rock Of Rochelle, whose first crop race this season, stands for a 2014 stud fee of R10 000
