Triple Crown hero highlights quality of KZN Sale

One of the most famous thoroughbreds to have graduated from a KZN Yearling Sale is former SASCOC Triple Crown and G1 Sansui Summer Cup winner Louis The King.

Louis The King

Louis The King

A son of Irish 2000 Guineas winner Black Minnaloushe and the unplaced Rich Man’s Gold mare Pamushana (Louis is his dam’s only foal), Louis The King was bred by The Alchemy, who famously sold the colt to trainer Geoff Woodruff for just R55 000 at the 2012 KZN Yearling Sale.

Louis The King would go on to prove himself one of the all time great bargains –winning seven of 15 outings and earning in excess of R5 000 000. Remarkably the colt, who was named for his owner’s son Louis, was the first racehorse ever owned by Tiaan van der Vyfer!

The colt reeled off wins in his first two outings, before a defeat in the Listed Secretariat Stakes saw Louis The King begin his march to Triple Crown glory.  The colt went on to win his next four races on the bounce –with his winning streak including the South African Triple Crown (G2 Gauteng Guineas, G1 SA Classic and G1 SA Derby).
This versatile champion (he won from 1400-2450m) trained on well to land the 2014 G1 Sansui Summer Cup, despite having to concede weight to all but one of his rivals.

Louis The King, the people’s champion, will stand his first season at Sorrento Stud this year for a fee of R10 000.

Black Minnaloushe

His classic winning sire Black Minnaloushe has five quality yearlings on offer at this year’s Sibaya KZN Yearling Sale, at the Sibaya Casino on June 30th and July 1st. The son of Storm Cat’s draft includes a colt from the family of champion sire Fort Wood (Lot 67), a filly out of a Fort Wood half sister to 2 Graded winners (Lot 127), and a half sister to former G1 J&B Met contender Awesome Power (Lot 192).

Cape farm The Alchemy, who consigned Louis The King to the 2012 KZN Sale, have an 11 strong draft at this year’s sale. The Alchemy’s draft includes yearlings by some of South Africa’s most popular and promising stallions including Gitano Hernando, Irish Flame, Judpot, Philanthropist, Querari, Seventh Rock and Warm White Night -and there is bound to be another star amongst them!
