Red hot sire Duke Of Marmalade was once again represented by an international stakes winner this past weekend.
With his daughter Diamond Made having recently won the G3 Adrian Knox Stakes in Australia, this time it was a German based son of Duke Of Marmalade to shine and this time it was the unbeaten Swinging Duke to shine.
The latter made it two wins from just two outings when landing Sunday’s Listed XTIP Derby-Trial at Dusseldorf and he looks an intriguing prospect for 2016.
Swinging Duke had previously saluted on debut over nearly 1800m and looks another exciting prospect for his in-form sire Duke Of Marmalade. Settled in mid-division early against the rail in Sunday’s Listed race, the chestnut was shuffled back towards the rear by the end of the back straight and had plenty to do once in line for home. Angled out for his effort, he responded to the whip to overhaul Zirconic Star in the final yards for a comfortable success.
Should the colt run in and succeed in the 2016 G1 Deutsches Derby, he will be the second consecutive son of Duke Of Marmalade to win the German classic., with the now Gestut Lindenhof based Nutan having prevailed in the Derby in 2015.
Duke Of Marmalade, whose eagerly awaited first South African crop are now foals, is the sire of 27 stakes winners, including Cartier Champion Simple Verse and French Oaks heroine Star Of Seville.
The champion son of Danehill is as versatile sire as he is a good one –with his son Moofeed having prevailed in the G3 Tommy Hotspur over 1000m and daughter Simple Verse landing the classic English St Leger over 2900m.
