Red hot sire Duke Of Marmalade was back in the news this weekend, just days after his daughter Simple Verse was first past the post in last weekend’s G1 Ladbrokes St Leger Stakes.
Another daughter of “The Duke”, Modernstone, gave her sire yet another feature win when she landed the Fasig Tipton Ladies Marathon Stakes at Kentucky Downs on Saturday.
Modernstone, who was picking up the first feature race win of her career, has now won or placed in nine of her 22 outings. The durable mare had previously finished second in both the Listed Magnolia Stakes, beaten only by subsequent G1 winner Contributer, and Listed Winter Derby Trial and hopefully she can go on from here for trainer Kelley Rubley.
Modernstone is the 24th stakes winner for Duke Of Marmalade, busy standing his second season in South Africa this year.
Duke Of Marmalade has enjoyed a superb season in 2015, with his tally of black type winners including four European classic winners. The five time Group 1 winner, whose close relatives include legendary US sire A P Indy, has been represented by stakes winners in six different countries this year, with his black type winners scoring in all of Britain, France, Germany, Italy, South Africa and the USA.
Set to cover another outstanding book of mares in 2015, Duke Of Marmalade, whose numerous high class relations also include former South African Champion Sire AL Mufti (himself sire of last season’s Champion Sire Captain Al) is standing at Drakenstein Stud for a fee of R100 000.
