Avontuur Thoroughbred Farm’s highly successful sire Var had a smart looking debut winner on Saturday.
His 3yo son Valbonne scored a three quarter of a length win first out for in-form trainer Brett Crawford and Corne Orffer when skating home over 1000m at Durbanville and looks yet another speedy sort to represent Var.
Bred by Varsfontein Stud, Valbonne was a R900 000 purchase (and second top lot sold) at the 2016 National Two Year Old Sale.
Out of the G3 winning Windrush mare Sunsational, Valbonne (who is inbred to the great sire Storm Cat) is a half-brother to two winners including G1 SA Fillies Classic winner Juxatpose.
He is but one of a number of talented sophomores for Var this season, with others including G2 Golden Horseshoe winner Purple Diamond, G1 Gold Medallion second Varallo, and Speedpoint and So Var, runner up in the G3 Cape Nursery and G3 Avontuur Umkhomazi Stakes respectively.
Var has had a memorable year in 2017 with highlights including his daughter Goddess Var topping the 2017 National Yearling Sale when knocked down to Shadwell South Africa for a record breaking R5 million.
