Vale Tiger Ridge
Wilgerbosdrift’s highly successful resident stallion, Tiger Ridge, has died. The sire passed away from a suspected heart attack on Thursday night.
Tiger Ridge was 18 years old at the time of his death.
An exceptionally well bred horse, Tiger Ridge was a son of dual Champion US Sire, Storm Cat, also sire of world leading sires Giant’s Causeway, Hennessy, Forest Wildcat (sire of Var), and Tale Of The Cat.
Out of Broodmare Of The Year Weekend Surprise, Tiger Ridge was a half-brother to US classic winners A.P. Indy (Belmont Stakes) and Summer Squall (Preakness Stakes). His second dam was Buckpasser matron, Lassie Dear – also dam of Champion Sire Al Mufti (Roberto).
This superb female line was also responsible for producing successful local sire Sportsworld, as well as the exciting young Moutonshoek sire, Mambo In Seattle.
Tiger Ridge, who was placed twice from just a handful of starts, retired to stud in Florida, before he was exported to South Africa in 2006.
The horse was champion first crop sire in Florida and also topped the first crop sires log in South Africa. His 27 stakes winners included the record breaking Strike The Tiger, who became the first North American trained horse to win at Royal Ascot, when he won the 2009 Windsor Castle Stakes.
Tiger Ridge’s first local crop included no fewer than nine stakes horses – headed by the Gr2 winner and millionaire Kavanagh. The latter made a winning debut when he won the Gr2 The Nursery – over another Tiger Ridge colt, The Raj, in 2010.
Tiger’s Ridge’s other stakes winners include the US millionaire Leah’s Secret (whose nine wins included the Gr2 Raven Run Stakes), as well as Gr1 Sansui Summer Cup hero Wagner and Equus Champion 3YO Filly Cherry On The Top (the only locally bred filly in history to win the South African Triple Tiara).
Other high-class performers by Tiger Ridge include classy filly Amur Affair (winner of the Gr3 Acacia Handicap), the very tough and game filly Follow The Piper (a stakes winner of 10 races), and Listed Oaks Trial winner, Ilha Grande.
Tiger Ridge had been enjoying a purple patch with his runners during the 2013-2014 season, with his runners including the Gr2 Victory Moon Stakes winner Tiger’s Retreat, and promising, unbeaten filly, Santa Carolina.
At the time of his death, Tiger Ridge’s progeny had won $32 000 000 in prize money.
He has some exceptionally well-bred juveniles on the ground this year, with Tiger’s progeny including siblings to such top-class graded stakes winners as Bulsara, Cherry On The Top,Escapology, and Cherry On The Cake.
Top-class racemares Cantorist, Chiquita, Dancing Penny, Honour And Glory, My Squeeza, and Via Della are also represented by Tiger Ridge juveniles this year, so Tiger’s legacy looks set to continue for the foreseeable future.
