Var double for Boland Stud

A pair of Var daughters, both bred by the Boland Stud, really caught the eye over the weekend.
First of the fillies to score was the talented Cup Cake, who was victorious in Friday’s Fairview feature, the Breeders Guineas Plate over 1400m.
Cup Cake (who, like Var’s great champion Val De Ra, is out of an Elliodor mare), powered home for former champion trainer Justin Snaith and owner Fred Crabbia to post an impressive three and a quarter length romp in the feature.

The filly, who was a R350 000 buy at the 2014 Emperors Palace National Yearling Sale, has now won or placed in all eight of her career outings and looks yet another well above average filly sired by Var.

Cup Cake has now won four of just five outings on the turf and she looks most unlikely to stop with Friday’s win.

Second of the Var/Boland Stud bred fillies to score this past weekend was the very speedy Miss Varlicious who justified cramped odds of 1-3 to land a conditions plate over 1200m at Greyville on Sunday.
The filly, bred on the same cross as sprint star Via Africa, does not know how to run a bad race, with Sunday’s success being Miss Varlicious’ fifth in just 11 outings and she is yet to finish out of the top three.

Var is also the sire of the Arc-En-Ciel Stud bred gelding Ess El Kay, who picked up his sixth win on Friday–and gave his tremendous sire a memorable third winner on the weekend.

Boland Stud, also breeders of recent Listed Wolf Power 1600 hero Captain Aldo, will offer four lots, and act as agents on three more, at April’s National Yearling Sale in Germiston.

The Boland draft includes:

Lot 213 –a Var colt out of an own sister to G1 Premier’s Champion Stakes winner Talahatchie

Lot 217 –a colt by champion sire Captain Al out of a full sister to an Argentine champion

Lot 355 –a colt (bred like champion Along Came Polly) by proven G1 blue blood Judpot and from the family of champions Olympic Duel and Dancing Duel

Lot 357 – a colt by Var out of a half sister to a G3 winner and from the family of champion Senor Santa and Cape Guineas hero Flight Alert

Lot 275 –a colt by European champion and world leading sire Oratorio and G3 winner Purple Lake

Lot 323 –a colt by champion What A Winter (whose relatives include Hyperion and Sir Tristram) and also hailing from the family of Esoterique, and who traces back to the founding mare Picture Play
