Avontuur’s resident stallion Var has been in the headlines over the past few weeks. Not only has the stallion’s progeny been shining in the sales ring, but Var’s runners have been firing on all fronts.
Over the past month, Var has been represented by a feature race winner ever week.
Not surprisingly, this success has ensured the former Gp1 Prix de L’Abbaye’s continued popularity in the sales ring.
At the recent March Yearling Sale, Var was the sales’ stand out stallion. Not only did Var top the sires aggregates, but he had three yearlings sell for R1 million apiece.
Var’s yearlings grossed R3.635 million at the March Sale, and averaged an impressive R519 286.
The first of the Vars to fetch R1 000 000 was a colt consigned by Klawervlei (as agent). The colt, inbred to the great Storm Cat, was knocked down to Geoff Woodruff.
As yet unnamed, the bay is out of the four time winning Bernstein mare, Bandera Nativa.
Second Var yearling to make seven figures at the March Sale was lot 155. Also a colt, he was consigned by Drakenstein Stud (as agent) and was snapped up by Mayfair Speculators for an even R1 million. Attractively named Arctic Blast, the colt is out of a daughter of champion racemare Icy Air.
The third Var colt to fetch R1 000 000 was lot 248. Consigned by Klawervlei Stud (as agent), the handsome chestnut was sold to top KZN trainer Dennis Drier (trainer of Var’s champion daughter Val De Ra). The colt, named Rock Royalty, is a half-brother to recent winner, Frederick Fox.
Var’s offspring have also been doing their part on the track to keep their sire’s name in the headlines. In March alone, Var has been represented by the following feature race winners:
Sea Cat (Breeders Guineas)
Vauclair (East Cape Sprint Cup)
Winter Passion (Bauhinia Handicap)
Var’s greatest son, Variety Club, could well add further glory to his sire’s impressive resume when he lines up on Dubai World Cup night in the Gr2 Godolphin Mile.
Sire of 14 Gr1 performers (and 50 stakes horses), Var is well represented at the 2014 Emperors Palace National Yearling Sale.
His 29 National Sale candidates include a brother to champion Val De Ra, a half-sister to current classy performer Glorious Jet, and a filly out of the beautifully bred stakes winner Treaj Pots.
