Avontuur’s outstanding sire Var was in great demand at the recent National 2-Y-O Sale which took place in Germiston last week.
Var, whose champion son Variety Club stands his first season at Klawervlei in 2015, was responsible for the top priced lot at the two day sale, in the form of the filly La Roquette. Catalogued as lot 107 and consigned by Varsfontein Stud (who ended the sale as the leading vendors), La Roquette was knocked down for a sales topping amount of R1.1 million. Purchased by Roland Bouwer, the filly was produced by the placed Western Winter mare Jodie, a full sister to Equus Champion 2YO Colt Ice Cube and the Grade One performer Jagged Ice.
Var also ended the sale as the top sire by aggregate, with five of his six lots to sell fetching R2.09 million, and averaging R418 000.
It has been another highly successful year in the sales ring for Var, with his progeny finding favour all over the country.
A Var colt was sold for R4 million at the Cape Premier Yearling Sale back in January, while another yearling by the sire was the fourth top lot sold at the Val De Vie Sale one month later.
Expected to cover another exceptional book of mares this season, Var has been represented by 16 Grade One performers to date, with his top offspring including dual Horse Of The Year Variety Club and champions Val De Ra and Via Africa.
Var’s daughters are also now starting to show promise as broodmares, with Var featuring as the maternal grandsire of impressive recent debut winner Executive Power.
