Varsfontein Stud colt smashes 2yo Sale Record
The Varsfontein Stud bred Bombarino set a new record price for the Emperors Palace National 2yo Sale.
The blue blooded colt was knocked down to Form Bloodstock for R2.6 million on Friday – which is the highest price ever paid at the 2YO Sale.
The sales topper is a son of the now deceased Lammerskraal Stud based sire Western Winter and is out of the stakes placed Spectrum mare Subyan Dreams.
Bombardino is a half-brother to six winners including talented filly Felix The Cat, who was second in both the Gr1 Thekwini Stakes and Gr1 Golden Slipper.
The colt, whose other relatives include Irish Derby winner Law Society, is also a half-brother to one of last season’s best 2yos, MLJet. The latter, a son of Jet Master, won his first two races before running a close third in the Gr1 Premier’s Champion Stakes.
The 2YO Sale was yet another success for Cape bred thoroughbreds. The top ten lots were all bred at Cape stud farms, while the top ten vendors were all Cape based breeders.
Former Cape sire Western Winter was the sales’ leading sire, both by aggregate and average. The son of Gone West led the sires table with an aggregate of R3.05 million, and his juveniles averaged a very healthy R762 500.
