Varsfontein Stud’s 2016 NYS draft

Varsfontein Stud, are proud to offer 20 yearlings at the upcoming National Yearling Sale in Germiston.
The farm, home to prominent sires Judpot, Gimmethegreenlight and Master Of My Fate, are also offering ten further lots as agent.

The draft includes yearlings by top class stallions Captain Al, Dynasty, Silvano, Var and their very successful resident sire Judpot. Former Equus Champion What A Winter also has members of his first crop (which have already proved very popular with buyers) in the Varsfontein draft.

Remarkably, 2016 Varsfontein’s National Sales draft of 20 includes the progeny of eight stakes winning mares, and some of the top families in the South African stud book are on offer.

First into the ring from Varsfontein will be lot 12 –a daughter of the much missed Sail From Seattle, whose progeny include the G1 winners Elusive Gold and Gulf Storm. This filly, whose dam is a stakes winning daughter of champion sire Jallad, is a half sister to five winners including stakes winning East Cape champion Yoshie.

Kingmambo’s half brother Judpot has enjoyed a great run this season, with his runners including impressive G1 SA Fillies Classic winner Juxtapose and G2 Supreme Cup star Deputy Jud. He has five yearlings in the draft including:

Lot 31 –a filly, inbred to the great Nureyev, out of a half sister to 2 stakes winners, including Champion and Triple Tiara winner Cherry On The Top, whose sire is a half brother to AP Indy –sire of Judpot.

Lot 59 – a half sister to 4 winners, this filly is out of a G2 winning half sister to champion filly Consensual (whose sire is a grandson of A P Indy-sire of Judpot).

Lot 171 – this well related colt is out of a stakes winning Fort Wood half sister to the farm’s very popular young sire Master Of My Fate, and his second dam is champion Promisefrommyheart. Bred like Judpot’s G1 winner Forest Indigo.

The farm’s resident sire and G1 L’Ormarins Queen’s Plate winner Gimmethegreenlight has made a good start to his stud career, with his first 2yos including three quick winners. The sire of 16 G1 winners and counting, Silvano is the sire of two yearlings in Varsfontein’s 2016 NYS draft – a colt whose dam is a full sister to Equus Champion 2YO Colt Ice Cube and G1 performed Jagged Ice (Lot 166), and a filly out of a stakes winning Captain Al half sister to Golden Slipper winner Princess Sassi (Lot 317).

Multiple Equus Champion What A Winter’s first crop of yearlings have already been in huge demand and the son of triple champion sire Western Winter is the sire of 2 lots in this draft. His first yearling is a three parts brother to a winner out of an Al Mufti half sister to G2 winner Vino Rosa (Lot 222), while his second yearling is a colt out of a winning half brother to champion 2yo Consensual and G2 winner Dance Along, while this is also the family of recent 2yo debut winner Myfunnyvalentine (Lot 45).

Champion racehorse and outstanding sire Dynasty, has had yearlings fetch up to R5.2 million. The former Horse Of The Year is also sire of Lot 228 – a filly (bred like Derby hero It’s My Turn) out of a half sister to G2 winner and sire Master Of My Fate, as well as the stakes winning Justthewayyouare (like Dynasty, that filly is by Fort Wood). Dynasty is also responsible for lot 389 – a colt out of a G2 winning Captain Al half sister to G1 winner Regal Ransom, and lot 305 –a half brother to G1 Summer Cup hero Master Sabina, and out of SA Oaks winner Sabina Park.

Reigning champion sire Captain Al has headed SA’s leading 2yo sires list on seven straight occasions. The former Cape Guineas winner is the sire of the beautifully bred filly out of SA Oaks winner Arcola –a half sister to fellow Oaks winners Ash Cloud and Princess Of Light (Lot 446). This filly is bred on the same cross as ill-fated Paddock Stakes winner Emerald Cove.

Storm Cat’s Irish 2000 Guineas winning son Black Minnaloushe is a well established sire, whose top offspring include G1 winners the world over. The sire of the likes of Ash Cloud, Louis The King, Kochka and Gold Onyx, Black Minnaloushe is also the sire of 1 lots here – this well bred colt is a half brother to 5 winners including G3 Diana Stakes winner and recent Listed Lady’s Pendant winner Double Whammy (Lot 105), and he is bred on the famed Storm Cat/Blushing Groom cross.

Gitano Hernando, who is from the same male line as Silvano, was an outstanding racehorse, who earned over $2 000 000 and who won both the G1 Goodwood Stakes and G1 Singapore International Cup. He is the sire of lot 334, a filly whose three time winning dam is a half sister to the dam of July entrant Easy Lover, and her second dam is a G3 winning granddaughter of US Champion Revidere.

Former US leading sire Philanthropist, who is related to top sires National Assembly, Sovereign Dancer and What A Pleasure, has made a pleasing start to his SA stud career with his first runners including the smart debut winner Good To Give. He has one lot on sale here, a filly (inbred to the great matron Grey Flight) out of National Assembly’s stakes winning 2yo Velvet Hue – a half sister to ill-fated G1 winner Divine Jury and top sprinter and young sire Divine Jet (Lot 403).
