Varsfontein Stud’s 2YO Sale draft to impress

Varsfontein are set to offer an outstanding draft of 14 juveniles at next week’s National 2YO Sale and the Paarl based farm will also be offering two more lots as agent.

Consigners of last year’s sales topper (now named Never Settle), Varsfontein’s first lot up for auction is 11, a daughter of resident sire and former G1 L’Ormarins Queen’s Plate winner Gimmethegreenlight. This beautifully bred filly, out of G3 winning Badger Land daughter Bushra, is a half sister to 3 winners include G3 East Cape Derby hero and R500 000 earner True Master.

Second of the string into the ring is lot 26, a son of red hot sire Dynasty, whose son Futura is a strong contender for Horse Of The Year honours next week. This stunningly bred colt, inbred to the legendary stallion Sadler’s Wells, hails from an awesome international family, with his relatives including European champions Diesis and Kris, as well as Irish 2000 Guineas winner Indian Haven and top local sire Count Dubois.

As agent, Varsfontein are also consigning lot 48, a Gimmethegreenlight half brother to stakes performers Jack Hobbs and Manx Missile. This attractive colt is from a top local family with his relatives including SA Fillies Classic winner Caughtintheslips and the brilliant but ill-fated Mister Cricket.

Lot 104, also offered by Varsfontein as agent, is a chestnut daughter of the great Silvano, sire of the first three home in the 2015Vodacom Durban July. Out of a stakes placed Jet Master mare (and bred like the top class performers Omaticaya and Silvano’s Jet), this chestnut filly is a sister in blood to the G2 Dingaans winner and G1 Cape Guineas second, Silver Flyer. Leading sire Var, responsible for outstanding fillies Val De Ra and Via Africa, is the sire of lot 107. This blue blooded filly, who has been named La Roquette, is out of a full sister to champion Ice Cube and high class G1 performer Jagged Ice, and the second dam is none other than the top class racemare Annie. Var has done well with Western Winter mares, with the mating having already produced the stakes performers Le Var and Winter Passion.

Team Green is the name of lot 126, a son of the More Than Ready horse Gimmethegreenlight. This well bred 2yo is a half brother to seven winners including the stakes winner Lady Asrai and his dam is a half sister to the international G1 winning sisters Irridescence and Perfect Promise.

Kingmambo’s half brother Judpot is the sire of lot 164, a chestnut filly by the name of Pots Of Money. Another with a lovely pedigree, she is out of a Strike Smartly half sister to two Graded winners including dual G1 winner Forest Path. This is also the family of July winning champion Spanish Galliard.

Gimmethegreenlight, whose first yearlings were well received last season, is the sire of lot 168, a bay filly who hails from the wonderful Enchanting family. Her second dam is none other than champion Enchantress, herself the dam of Champion 2YO Filly Laverna. Gimmethegreenlight is also responsible for lot 178, a colt out of a half sister to the brilliant Dash For Gretna, while his filly out of Pimento, named Green Pepper, is out of a half sister to Oaks winner Sabina Park. Judpot has made an exceptional start to his stud career, having Grade One performers in both his first two crops to race. The son of A P Indy has a lovely draft at the 2YO Sale and is also responsible for lot 194, a colt out of the stakes winning Model Man mare Prototype. This well bred colt is bred on the same Judpot/Model Man cross as former Equus Champion Along Came Polly.

William Grace is the name of 193, and this Dynasty colt looks sure to find favour with many. Not only is he a son of one of South Africa’s top stallions, but he is out of a stakes placed Jallad daughter of Caughtintheslips. The Dynasty/Jallad cross has already produced such high class performers as July runner up and million Run For It and G3 Christmas Handicap Fourth Estate.

Captain Al, Champion Sire and Champion 2YO Sire last season, has a lovely colt to his credit in the form of lot 197, a colt by the name of Captain Von Trapp. This bay is a half brother to none other than former G1 SA Derby winner Royal Bencher, and is bred like ill-fated G1 Paddock Stakes winner Emerald Cove.Lot 197

One of the sales’ potential stars could well be lot 241, a bay son of the wonderful stallion Var. Not only is he a half brother to last year’s sales topper, but this colt is also a half brother to the talented G1 performers Felix The Cat and MLJet. From a top class international family, with his relatives including Irish Derby winner Law Society.

Leading young sire Judpot is the sire of lot 297, a bay colt whose dam is a daughter of Caesour and former champion filly Kiss Of Peace, and this is also the family of champion sprinter and leading sire Harry Hotspur.

Trippi has enjoyed a sensational 12 months, with his top performers including the outstanding fillies Hammie’s Hooker and dual G1 winner Inara, and he is also the sire of 302, a filly named Triple Digit. She is out of a winning half sister to no fewer than four black type performers including G1 winner Fair Maiden, who, like Trippi, is a direct descendant of the legendary sire Mr Prospector.
