Varsfontein’s classy Val De Vie draft
Leading Cape farm Varsfontein Stud are proud to offer a strong draft at this month’s Val De Vie Yearling Sale, set to take place in Franschhoek on February 22nd.
Varsfontein, breeders of such top class recent performers as Ash Cloud, Captain America, Master Of My Fate, and Yorker, will be offering 15 yearlings and will be offering four other lots as agent.
Understandably, the farm’s resident sires Gimmethegreenlight and Judpot feature strongly in their 19 strong draft and both horses should prove popular at the Val De Vie Sale.
Well bred Gr1 L’Ormarins Queen’s Plate Gimmethegreenlight shares his sire More Than Ready with one of Australia’s most exciting and talked about sires – Sebring. A top class miler, and one of the few horses ever to beat the mighty Variety Club, Gimmethegreenlight is the sire of four of the Varsfontein draft.
His first yearling under the Varsfontein banner is lot 20 – a filly, whose winning Fort Wood dam is a half sister to SA Oaks winner Sabina Park. This well bred filly’s third dam is Fillies Guineas winner Kendal Green.
Second of the Gimmethegreenlights on offer here is lot 23, a colt who is a three parts brother to Breeders Cup winner and hugely popular young sire Pluck (also by More Than Ready). This superbly bred colt is from the wonderful Soho Secret family responsible for such champions as London News and Kings Gambit, as well as Varsfontein’s exciting new sire Master Of My Fate.
Gimmethegreenlight is also the sire of lot 52, a colt out of the G1 winning mare Duchess Daba, as well as 92, a beautifully bred filly whose stakes winning dam is an own sister to R2 million earner and Equus Champion Young Rake.
The magnificently bred Judpot, an A P Indy half brother to Kingmambo, has made a huge impression in South Africa with his first crops to race. Judpot, whose first runners included the Gr1 winners Along Came Polly and Forest Indigo, has some top class 3yos to his credit this season including high class filly Double Whammy. Judpot is responsible for eight of Varsfontein’s string.
His first lot on sale is lot 8 a full brother to ill-fated Gr1 performer Mister Cricket. This well bred colt is out of a full sister to the top class G2 winner Caughtintheslips.
Second of the Judpots on sale is lot 48, a colt by the name of Designer Pots. Bred on the same cross as Champion Along Came Polly, this beautifully bred colt is out of G2 winning Model Man mare Cruise Collection and his relatives include R1.7 million earner Captain America. Judd Power, lot 89, is another bred on the Judpot/Model Man nick, with this colt being a son of four time stakes winner Prototype (whose full brother is G1 winner Fallon).
Another well bred yearling by Judpot is lot 57, a lovely chestnut filly out of former G1 Garden Province Stakes heroine Final Claim. The latter, whose dam is Broodmare Of The Year Ollies Last, is a half sister to Cape Guineas winner Alpha Omega.
Judpot is also the sire of lot 67, a filly from the famed Corn family, as well as lot 77, a really nicely bred filly whose dam is a half sister to G1 SA Classic winner Forest Path.
Pint Pot is the name of lot 88, a filly out of a stakes winning mare from the family of G1 winners Divine Act and Kendal Green,
Judpot’s final lot in the Varsfontein draft is lot 91, a Caesour granddaughter, her dam a sister to three black type horses, including top filly Dacha. This well bred filly’s immediate relatives include Captain America himself, and further back this filly traces back to 1000 Guineas winner Picture Play.
Varsfontein also offer a number of other exceptionally well bred yearlings in their draft.
Among them is lot 18, a son of red hot sire Trippi, whose offspring have amassed over $50 million in stakes. This beautifully bred colt, by the name of Gold Standard, is a half brother to recent debut winner Oh Boy, and his second dam is legendary champion Olympic Duel.
Well performed young sires Gitano Hernando and Pathfork are also represented in the draft. Former Singapore Cup hero Gitano Hernando, surely one of the best performed young sires to come to stud in South Africa, is the sire of lot 69, a filly out of the classy stakes winning mare Lady Perez.
Former Irish Champion 2YO Pathfork is a Group 1 winner with a magnificent pedigree. The Highlands Farm’s resident sire is responsible for lot 70, a superbly filly from the same family as stallion legends Danehill , Machiavellian and Northern Dancer.
Storm Cat’s successful local sire sons Black Minnaloushe and Mogok are also both represented in the Varsfontein draft. Louis The King’s sire Black Minnaloushe (also sire of the Varsfontein Stud bred Oaks winner Ash Cloud) is the sire of Cat In The Hat, lot 78. This colt is out of a full sister to a Gr3 winner and is from the same family as champion sprinter Goldmark.
Machiavellian’s half brother Mogok, sire of such G1 stars as Gypsy’s Warning and The Apache, is the sire of lot 87. This colt, who has been named Pagoda, is out of a half sister to Equus Champion Festive Occasion – also the dam of the now exported Gr1 winner Do You Remember. A colt with a classic pedigree!
Varsfontein also offer two exceptionally bred colts in the form of lot 4 and 10 respectively. Lot four, a colt by the name of Doosra, is a son of six times champion 2yo sire Captain Al and is bred on the same cross responsible for Gr1 Paddock Stakes winner Emerald Cove. Doosra, who is out of the high class SA Fillies Classic winner Caughtintheslips, is a half brother to 4 winners including stakes winner Captain’s Knock.
Sensational sire Dynasty, whose son Futura won both the Gr1 L’Ormarins Queen’s Plate and Gr1 J&B Met this season, is the sire of lot 10. This stunningly bred colt is a half brother to feature race winner Kiss Me Hardy and 3 other winners. Out of a stakes placed Jet Master mare, this blue blooded colt’s second dam is champion Kiss Of Peace.
