What A Winter filly one for the ages!

Boland Stud are proud to offer, as agent, a daughter of one of South Africa’s hottest young sires, at next week’s Sibaya KZN Yearling Sale in Durban.

Lot 176

Lot 176

Catalogued as lot 176, this filly is a daughter of triple Equus Champion and four time G1 winner What A Winter.

One of the best South African sprinters of the recent era, the now Drakenstein Stud domiciled What A Winter won 15 races and over R3 000 000 during a career which saw him account for such G1 winners and champions as August Rush, Chocolicious, Copper Parade, Delago Deluxe, Ebony Flyer, J J The Jet Plane, Shea Shea, Solo Traveller, Top Seller, Via Africa, and Villandry.

This superbly credentialed young sire (by a triple champion sire and from the same family as legendary sires Hyperion and Sir Tristram) has quickly established himself as one of South Africa’s hottest young stallions. What A Winter’s first yearlings this season have been in huge demand at sales around South Africa.

At the 2016 Cape Premier Yearling Sale, What A Winter yearlings fetched up to R850 000, while the charismatic champion was the leading first crop sire at the 2016 National Yearling Sale. All 20 of What A Winter yearlings offered at the NYS sold for an aggregate of R7.1 million and averaged an impressive R355 000.

Desert Prince

Desert Prince

Inbred to the legendary sire Mr Prospector, this filly (whose second and third dams are by the great stallions Darshaan and Green Desert respectively) on offer is not only from one of the great male lines of the world (Gone West) but is also a direct descendant of one of history’s greatest broodmares.

She traces back to 1000 Guineas winner Picture Play –whose daughter Queen Of Light (seventh dam of the filly on sale), rates as one of the greatest broodmares of the 20th century.

Herself a top class racemare (whose wins included the now G1 Falmouth Stakes), Queen Of Light is the ancestress of numerous classic winners and champions, including Crocket, Desert Prince, Esoterique, Fairy Footsteps, Greinton, Light Cavalry, Latice, Lawman, champion and Epsom Derby winner Royal Palace, and the top class miler and highly successful sire and broodmare sire Welsh Pageant.
In South Africa, Queen Of Light features as the ancestress of former G1 H F Oppenheimer Horse Chestnut Stakes winner Captain America, among others.
Already named What A Princess, this blue blooded filly is well and truly bred to be anything!
