Wide draw for Oratorio star in Cox Plate

Mourinho, a son of Avontuur’s red hot sire Oratorio, has pulled a rather wide draw for Saturday’s $3 million G1 William Hill Cox Plate at Moonee Valley.
Australia’s greatest WFA race has attracted a star studded line up, with the final field of 14 including no fewer than 11 G1 winners and Mourinho certain rates a lively contender for one of the world’s truly great turf showpieces.

Mourinho, winner of the recent G1 Underwood Stakes, has pulled a draw of 12 for the Moonee Valley contest. The durable eight-year-old, who has earned more than $1 million in prize money, was ultra game last time out in the Underwood where he accounted for subsequent G1 Caulfield Cup winner Mongolian Khan as well as fellow Cox Plate runners Fawkner and The Cleaner.

An eleven time winner, the son of Oratorio has no fewer than six Group race wins to his credit.

The Cox Plate, to be run over 2040m, has been won by many superstars over the years including Kingston Town (3 times), Makybe Diva, Octagonal, Phar Lap (twice) So You Think (twice), Strawberry Road, Sunline (twice) and Tulloch.
