Avontuur’s red hot sire Var has made a sizzling start to the 2016-2017 season, and was represented by his fifth winner in the past six days when his son Cortada made a winning debut at Durbanville on Wednesday.
Bred by John and Liz Slade, the blue blooded Cortada duly justified favouritism when running out an easy 1.25 length winner over 1200m, and he looks sure to build on this maiden success.
An R850 000 purchase from the 2015 Emperors Palace Select Yearling Sale, Cortada (bred on the same cross as Var’s G1 winning son Contador) is out of the Fort Wood mare Mabola Plum.
His sire has an exciting crop of three-year-olds this season, headed by G2 The Debutante winner A Womens Way, G1 SA Nursery runner up Rivarine, Listed Ruffian Stakes heroine Exquisite Touch, and G2 The Debutante third La Revere.
The sire of more than 70 stakes horses (and counting!), Var has nine lots on sale at Saturday’s CTS Ready To Run Sale:
