Winning double for top-class Corner
Daytona Stud is home to the very successful broodmare Hockey Corner. The latter, a winning daughter of leading broodmare sire Sportsworld, has enjoyed a good patch with her runners of late.
Her Silvano son Sonny Bill won over 1600m for in form trainer Sean Tarry last Saturday, while her 3yo daughter Captain’s Corner, made a smart winning debut at Kenilworth on Wednesday to give their dam a quick double.
Owned by Chris Van Niekerk (who is also a part owner of Whiteline Fever), Sonny Bill was a R850 000 purchase from the 2012 Cape Premier Yearling Sale (Book 1).
His half sister Captain’s Corner, who is owned by Khaya Stables, was another pricey purchase – she cost R1.1 million at the 2013 Emperors Palace National Yearling Sale.
Their dam, Hockey Corner, has produced five winners to date – including the brilliant Whiteline Fever (by Right Approach). The latter, who topped the 2010 Cape Summer Yearling Sale, has won seven races, including two runnings of the Gr2 Hawaii Stakes and earned over R1.8 million in stakes.
Hockey Corner unfortunately does not have a foal at foot this season, but is back in foal to leading sire Captain Al (the sire of Captain’s Corner). Hockey Corner also has a lovely Silvano yearling filly, who has been named Hope Solo, while her 2yo Dynasty filly (by the name of Diamond League) is in training with Dennis Drier.
