Winter leads the way

Drakenstein Stud’s resident sire What A Winter has proved hugely popular in the sales ring in 2016 thus far, and his first crop yearlings continued to make waves this weekend past at the 2016 March Yearling Sale.
The triple Equus Champion ended the two day Cape sale as the Leading Sire by Aggregate, with his 11 yearlings sold grossing a total of R2,430,000.

What A Winter sired lots sold included lot 54, an unnamed colt who was knocked down to What A Winter’s former trainer Mike Bass for R460 000.
Consigned by Favour Stud, the colt was the Durbanville sale’s third top colt sold.

His sire has really made a sensational start to his commercial life as a stallion. Not only did What A Winter head the March Sale sires list, but the champion was also top of the first season sires log at February’s Val De Vie Yearling Sale.

Prior to that, What A Winter was responsible for an R850 000 colt at January’s Cape Premier Yearling Sale, where the son of Western Winter had 8 yearlings average over R500 000.

His popularity comes as no surprise, however. What A Winter was an outstanding athlete, whose 15 wins netted him over R3 000 000 in stakes, as well as three Equus awards. From the powerful male line, responsible for such sires as Elusive Quality, Speightstown, Munnings, Zafonic, and Grand Slam, What A Winter, a half brother to ill-fated champion What A Question, is from the family of breed shaping sires Big Game, Hyperion, Pharamond, Sickle and Sir Tristram.

What A Winter also has a tremendous draft on offer at April’s National Yearling Sale in Germiston. His nine yearlings destined for the National Sale include a colt out of a half sister to champion 2yo filly Consensual (Lot 45), a half brother to G3 winner Fantastic Mr Fox (Lot 103), a daughter of stakes winner Mina Salaam (who is by Medaglia D’Oro out of champion Circle Of Life) (Lot 212), and a half sister to talented nine time winner and G3 performer S’il Vous Plait (Lot 322).
