2014 fees set for Drakenstein Stud

2014 fees set for Drakenstein Stud
Drakenstein Stud recently announced its stallion fees for 2014. Leading sire Trippi, who has enjoyed magnificent season in 2013-2014, is the stud’s top priced stallion.

The son of End Sweep will sport a 2014  stud fee of R120 000, following a season which saw Trippi catapult to the second spot on South Africa’s leading 2yo sires log. Trippi is also seventh on South Africa’s general sires log, with his offspring have earned in excess of R7.7 million in prize money this season so far.

The stud’s most recent acquisition, champion Duke Of Marmalade, will stand his first South African season for a fee of R100 000. One of the last great sons of Danehill, Duke Of Marmalade reeled off five Group 1 wins in a row – and has already been represented by over 20 stakes horses, a tally which includes Irish Oaks runner Venus De Milo.

Philanthropist, whose runners continue to excel in North America, had his 2014 fee set at R80 000. His first SA foals have received rave reviews from many breeders, who are delighted by what Philanthropist is siring. Sire of Canadian champions Pender Harbour and Phil’s Dream, Philanthropist looks an exceptionally exciting addition to the local sire band.

Local legend Horse Chestnut has made a fantastic start to his stud career, with his first 3yos include the top-class performers Chestnut’s Rocket, Demitasse, and leading Vodacom Durban July contender Rake’s Chestnut. With some exciting 2yos in the wings, Horse Chestnut looks yet another top-class sire to represent the powerful Sadler’s Wells male line. His 2014 fee has been fixed at R25 000.

Like Horse Chestnut, What A Winter is a locally bred superstar. The multiple champion sprinter is a son of triple champion sire Western Winter, now sadly deceased. A half-brother to a champion, What A Winter is direct descendant of one of history’s greatest mares Selene, and hails from the same family as Australasian sire legend Sir Tristram. What A Winter, whose much anticipated first foals arrive this year, will stand for a 2014 fee of R20 000.
