$350 000 for colt out of Cape bred Champion
Former Cape bred champion Irridescence made headlines recently when her son made $350 000 at the 2014 Keeneland September Yearling Sale.
The colt, a son of dual US Champion sire Smart Strike, was consigned by Paramount Stables, as Agent, and knocked down to D.P. Racing for $350 000.
Catalogued as lot 734, the unnamed bay is the fourth foal produced by Irridescence, who proved a tremendous globetrotter during her racing days –winning or placing in Gr1 races in five different countries.
Her victories included a major score in Hong Kong’s Gr1 QE II Cup of 2006, where Irridescence accounted for the great mare, and dam of this year’s Investec Derby winner Australia, Ouija Board.
South Africa’s Champion 3YO Filly of 2005, Irridescence also won the Listed Balanchine (in Dubai) and was second in both the Group 1 Falmouth Stakes (Britain) and Gr1 Beverly D Stakes (USA), and ran third in the Group 1 Prix de L’Opera (France).
Irridescence, a dual Grade 1 winner in South Africa, was a full-sister to the record-breaking Perfect Promise, winner of the Gr1 C F Orr Stakes in Australia.
By Varsfontein Stud’s former sire Caesour, the two sisters were produced by South Africa’s Broodmare Of The Year in 2006, Meretricious.
To date, Irridescence is the dam of two winners, who have scored in North America and Russia respectively.
