Antonius Pius – SA’s leading first crop sire
Highlands Farm’s well bred young sire Antonius Pius is officially South Africa’s leading first crop sire, by prize money, for the 2012-2013 season.
The son of Danzig not only topped the first crop sires list, in an unusually tough and competitive year with promising young sires, but also finished second to Captain Al on the leading sires of juveniles (by prize money) list.
Antonius Pius was represented by seven juvenile winners in his first local crop, who earned an impressive R1 724 025. He narrowly beat out another exceptional young sire Judpot, who finished less than R50 000 behind him in the struggle to become SA’s top young sire. Next on the list came Sail From Seattle, Rebel King and Jay Peg.
Antonius Pius had three stakes winners in his first juvenile crop, as well as Ace Antonius – who won the inaugural KZN Yearling Sale Million on Vodacom Durban July day.
The former Breeders Cup Mile runner up’s stakes winners included dual Gr3 winner Antonius Du Bois (who looks an exciting Cape Summer Season prospect), talented My Sanctuary (Gr2 The Debutante) and Yoshie. The latter looked impressive when she won four of six starts, and she too could well add further glory to her promising young sire.
Antonius Pius also enjoyed a good year in the sales ring, where his yearlings fetched up to R700 000.
