Highlands Farm’s resident sire Antonius Pius is the sire of talented Gauteng galloper Cool Chardonnay, who won Saturday’s Listed Aquanaut Handicap for a second year in a row.
The gelding produced a fine turn of foot to win the Turffontein feature by three parts of a length, going away, from runner up Elusive Flyer with the imported Marmalady back in third.
Cool Chardonnay, who clocked a time of 157.79, was superbly ridden by Callan Murray.
Bred by Highlands Farm, Cool Chardonnay, who was runner up previously in the G3 Racing Association Handicap on Summer Cup day, has now won four and placed three times in just ten outings.
The four-year-old, who looks a natural contender for some of South Africa’s bigger staying races this season, has now banked R354 375 –with the promise of more to come.
Cool Chardonnay, an R80 000 buy from the 2013 Emperors Palace Ready To Run Sale, is one five stakes horses to have emerged from Antonius Pius’ second South African crop of runners. Other notable performers from this crop include Listed Summer Juvenile Stakes winner Arria and G3 Tony Ruffel Stakes winner and R530 000 earner, Belong To Me.
Former G1 Breeders’ Cup Mile runner up and leading first crop sire Antonius Pius is strongly represented at both the upcoming March Yearling Sale and April’s National Yearling Sale.
The son of Danzig has 22 lots on offer at this month’s CTS March Yearling Sale –including a filly out of G3 winner U Aintseenothinyet (Lot 51), a filly out of A P Indy’s stakes winning granddaughter Country Girl (Lot 117), a colt out of G3 performer Heading Home (Lot 157), and a full brother to the useful Lavender Landscape (Lot 182).
Antonius Pius has four yearlings on sale at the National Sale in Germiston, with his draft including a colt from the family of champions Dalakhani and Daylami (Lot 65), a half brother to stakes placed 2yo Nomvula (Lot 66), a filly from the family of top fillies For The Lads, Skin Tight and Tight Drums (Lot 68) and a three parts sister to the talented Thrust, whose dam is a G1 2yo by champion sire and leading broodmare sire Jallad (Lot 176).
