Klipdrif Stud is home to former Equus Broodmare Of The Year Sunshine Lover, one of the finest broodmares currently at stud in South Africa. Owned by Team Valor, Sunshine Lover is clearly in great shape and looks superb –if these recent photos are anything to go by!

Best known as the dam of the outstanding fillies Captain’s Lover and Ebony Flyer, Sunshine Lover unfortunately did not get in foal last year.
However, she is currently safely in foal to Avontuur’s exciting stallion Oratorio, whose first local crop of foals have caused something of a sensation.

A daughter of champion sire Badger Land and Argosy mare Miss Bikini, the winning Sunshine Lover was South Africa’s Broodmare Of The Year in 2011.

She achieved a remarkable feat, when producing two winners of the Grade 1 Avontuur Estate Cape Fillies Guineas. Sunshine Lover’s first winner of the race was her Captain Al daughter Captain’s Lover, who was victorious in the race in 2007.

Captain’s Lover later embarked on a successful international campaign, which saw her successful in France’s Group 3 Prix du Pin and North America’s Matchmaker Stakes.

As talented as Captain’s Lover was (she was an Equus Champion of 2008), however, her Jet Master half sister, Ebony Flyer, was even better.
A really charismatic and distinctive looking filly, Ebony Flyer went unbeaten in her first four starts, culminating in a defeat of Horse Of The Year Igugu in the Cape Fillies Guineas of 2010. Third next time out in the Gr1 L’Ormarins Queen’s Plate, where she accounted for triple Horse Of The Year Pocket Power, Ebony Flyer went on to add wins in the Gr1 SA Fillies Sprint, Gr1 Klawervlei Majorca Stakes and Gr3 Diana Stakes to her impressive resume.

One of the finest fillies to race in South Africa in the past decade, Ebony Flyer produced her first foal, a Trippi colt, recently to further enhance the dynasty of this tremendous family.

Sunshine Lover is also the dam of talented gelding Cape Cutter, a full brother to Captain’s Lover. The 4yo, like his siblings trained by Justin Snaith, was second in both the Listed East Cape Guineas and Listed Racing Association Stakes last season.
