Champion racehorse for Moutonshoek
It was recently announced that former Canadian Champion Marchfield will relocate to
Chris Gerber’s Moutonshoek. He will stand alongside former Gr1 Travers Stakes runner up Mambo In Seattle, whose first yearlings are being sold this year.
Marchfield was an outstanding racehorse, who earned a Sovereign Award as Canada’s Champion Older Male in both 2008 and 2009. He was runner up in one of Canada’s premier events for 2yos, the Coronation Stakes, and won the classic Breeders Stakes at three. The Breeders Stakes is the third leg of the Canadian Triple Crown, and has been previously won by such greats as Breeders Cup winners Chief Bearhart and Dance Smartly, as well as leading sires With Approval and Runaway Groom.
At four, the colt captured the Gr2 Autumn Stakes, while at five Marchfield took out two graded stakes races – the Gr2 Sky Classic Stakes and the Gr3 Dominion Day Handicap. During his career, Marchfield defeated such stars as Champs Elysees (Horse of the Year), Mike Fox (Queen’s Plate), Judiths Wild Rush (Champion Sprinter), Marlang (Breeders Stakes) and Alezzandro (Champion 3yo colt) , to name a few.
Marchfield, who won seven races, earned over $1 000 000 during his racing career, mainly on turf and polytrack.
He is one of ten official champions by former US Horse of the Year and dual champion US stallion A P Indy. Responsible for of over 140 stakes winners, A P Indy is best known in South Africa as the sire of the ill-fated Camden Park. The latter’s champion son, Jay Peg, has made a cracking start to his stud career, and has already produced a graded stakes winner in his first crop of 2yos (Olympic Owen).
A truly great sire, A P Indy is an equally successful sire of sires. His outstanding sire sons include Pulpit (sire of Tapit), Bernardini, Malibu Moon, Indygo Shiner, Stephen Got Even and Mineshaft.
Orb, favourite for the 2013 Kentucky Derby, is a son of Malibu Moon!
Marchfield’s female line is equally illustrious. His dam, Pico Teneriffe, is a top-class daughter of the breed shaping sire Red Ransom. Canada’s Broodmare of the Year in 2009, Pico Teneriffe was a top-class racemare, who won or placed in 12 stakes races!
Second dam Ballerina Princess is by Mr Prospector – whose daughters have nicked so well with A P Indy. The A P Indy/Mr Prospector has previously produced such outstanding performers as Tempera (Champion filly), Pulpit, Mineshaft (Horse of the Year), Malibu Moon, Tomisue’s Delight (Ruffian Handicap), Flatter (successful sire), and Congrats (successful sire).
Ballerina Princess herself was a top-class broodmare. She has produced stakes performers including Pico Teneriffe and Salmon Ladder (G3 St Simon Stakes).
Top-class performers from this female line include multiple Gr1 winner Cryptoclearance, himself founder of a dynasty. Sire of over 40 stakes winners , Cryptoclearance’s sons include successful sire Victory Gallop, as well as Ride The Rails (sire of sensational US sire Candy Ride).
This female line has done very well in South Africa, with members include such successful sires as Peaceable Kingdom and Home Guard. Other top sires from the female line include champion 2yo sire Harlan’s Holiday, as well as Boldnesian – himself the great grandsire of A P Indy!
Marchfield’s first crop are yearlings in North America this year.
