Classic hopes for Rain relative

Wilgerbosdrift’s exciting new sire Soft Falling Rain hails from a truly outstanding US female line and the champion son of National Assembly’s family looks like it could get even stronger in the months ahead.

Promising US 3yo Shagaf (by Bernardini) made it two wins from as many outings when the blue blooded colt landed an allowance race at Gulfstream Park by two lengths over a number of well regarded three-year-olds.

He had previously broken his maiden by six lengths when successful over 1600m at Aqueduct and Shagaf looks destined for feature race company.
A three parts brother to former Breeders’ Cup hero Eldaafer (by Bernardini’s sire A P Indy), Shagaf is out of the latter’s Sky Beauty Stakes winning half sister Muhaarwa (by Unbridled’s Song).

His second dam is G1 Starlet Stakes/G1 Del Mar Debutante winner Habibti, with Shagaf’s fourth dam Quillamo also featuring as the third dam of Equus Champion 2YO and G2 Godolphin Mile winner Soft Falling Rain.

The latter’s half brother, Splendid Garden, will bid to provide this powerful female line with more black type, as he is one of 16 horses entered in the upcoming G3 Tommy Hotspur Handicap.

Soft Falling Rain, who won his first seven starts including the G1 SA Nursery, recently completed a successful first season at stud, where the Highlands Farm bred star proved hugely popular.

Among the top class mares tested in foal to Soft Falling Rain this season are Equus Champion Alboran Sea, a triple G1 winning daughter of the great Rock Of Gibraltar.

Fully booked in 2015, Soft Falling Rain had a first year stud fee of R40 000.
