Classy pair for Connemara
Lindi and Paul Garlicki’s Connemara Stud has enjoyed plenty of success this season, as breeders of, among others, Listed Michaelmas Handicap winner Pessoa. The latter runs in weekend’s G3 King’s Cup.
The Garlickis also enjoyed a tremendous spell in December last year, being represented by five winners over a two week spell.
The Garlickis first got involved with breeding back in 1988, and from a small number of foals (they average between four and five foals annually, they have bred a number of top-class performers.
One of their first classy performers was Hard Warrior, a G2 placed winner of six, while another feather in their cap was the smart filly Stunning Kitten – one of the best offspring sired by Springing Leopard. Stunning Kitten was five time winner, who won the Tony Ruffel Handicap.
The stud also bred the talented Sudden Storm, winner of the Easter Handicap – and a horse of huge potential before injury interrupted his career. Now at stud, Sudden Storm was a leading fancy for the July of his year. The Garlickis also assisted in the raising of G1 Cape Fillies Guineas winner Sparkling Gem, a giant of a filly who won over R1 000 000 in prize money.
Connemara have two well bred yearlings on sale at the 2013 Cape Premier Yearling Sale (Book 2).
Lot 68 is a bay daughter of Black Minnaloushe, sire of smart local performers Gold Onyx, The Black Rose, and this season’s top-class 3yo Black Toga. The filly, whose dam is by leading broodmare sire Jallad, is from a prolific family of stakes winners, including G2 winning filly La Deportista, 13 time stakes winner Juan Pablo, and the G1 sire Lion Tamer.
The filly is described by Lindi as “attractive and athletic.
Lot 75 is a striking looking colt named Astro. By former champion 2yo Argonaut, a son of champion sire Western Winter and outstanding broodmare Aquasarto, the colt is out of the high-class racemare Star Safari. The latter, by Jallad, was just touched off in the Gr2 SA Oaks, and is a half-sister to this season’s smart 3yo Sky Pirate – winner of the Allez France Handicap. This is a high-class US family of numerous black type performers.
The Garlickis rate this colt highly, saying “Astro is a super colt, very powerful and athletic.”
Lindi is delighted with the new incentives put into place by Cape Thoroughbred Sales. She says the bonus scheme introduced a few years earlier at Grand West proved a huge success, and prices rose noticeably.
