Cracking Grade One double for Cape breeders
Varsfontein Stud’s Carl and Amanda De Vos achieved a remarkable Grade One double at Turffontein last Saturday.
The couple bred both Yorker and Ash Cloud – who won the Gr1 Champions Challenge (R2 000 000) and Gr1 Wilgerbosdrift SA Oaks (R1 000 000) respectively.
The magnificent looking Yorker, a son of champion sire Jet Master and Al Mufti mare Little Indian, has been a revelation this season. He has won three of the country’s biggest Gr1 races (Summer Cup, Horse Chestnut Stakes and Champions Challenge) and looks unlikely to stop here.
A R1.8 million buy at the 2011 Cape Premier Yearling Sale, Vodacom Durban July nominee Yorker has now won 6 times and earned over R3.7 million in prize money, and he looks a leading contender for championship honours at the end of the season.
His dam Little Indian, was a stakes placed winner of four, who was runner up in the Listed Syringa Handicap. Currently in foal to Oratorio, the daughter of Al Mufti’s previous two winners include former Gr2 The Nursery runner up, The Raj.
Black Minnaloushe filly Ash Cloud scored a 16-1 upset when landing the first stakes race of her career, Saturday’s R1 000 000 SA Oaks. An R800 000 buy at the 2012 Emperors Palace National Yearling Sale, Ash Cloud’s classic victory has made her a enormously exciting and valuable filly. There can be few fillies who have two classic winning half-sisters, and one can only speculate as to what Ash Cloud’s broodmare value might be.
Remarkably, the filly is the third Oaks winner produced by her dam, Star Of Arcole. This is an achievement rarely before, if ever, accomplished by any broodmare, and Star Of Arcole looks a definite candidate for title of Broodmare Of The Year.
Star Of Arcole, a daughter of champion sire Foveros and Natal Oaks winner Arcole, was previously represented by the classic winning fillies Arcola (SA Oaks) and Princess Of Light (Gold Circle Oaks). She is also the dam of the high-class, stakes class stayer Drill Sargeant – who has, at the time of writing, already won nine times.
Unfortunately, Star Of Arcole’s 2013 Var colt foal died, and she is not currently in foal. She is truly a one in a life time broodmare!
