CTS to host Africa’s first $1 000 000 race
At a glittering media launch on Wednesday evening, Cape Thoroughbred Sales announced they would be hosting Africa’s first ever $1 000 000 race.
The race, to be held at Kenilworth in January 2016, would be open to graduates purchased off the 2014 Cape Premier Yearling Sale and March Yearling Sale of the same year. Its stake money makes the CTS sponsored contest by far the richest race in South Africa – easily outpointing races such as the July, Met and Summer Cup.

With a winners cheque of $500 000, the race will contested over 1400m, and will pay out handsome dividends to the first five finishers. This 3yo feature will also give any fillies entered a 2.5 sex allowance and the final field will be determined by merit ratings and performance.

Second home in the inaugural running will receive $200 000, third $ 150 000, 4th $100 000 and $40 000. The vendor responsible for the 2016 $1 000 000 winner will also receive a payment – of $10 000.

Buyers will need to buy in at the 2014 Cape Premier Yearling Sale for R5 000, while at the March Yearling Sale, buyers and vendors, will need to buy in for R5 000 apiece. The buy-in would increase to R15 000 from the 2015 Cape Premier Yearling Sale, for both buyer and vendor, while the buy-in will increase to R10 000 at the March Sale.

One of the goals of this historic and remarkable race is to attract overseas buyers – who have the chance to win a lucrative race, with a horse whose price and keep is a fraction of what they would have to pay back home.

CTS’s Adrian Todd justifiably described the race as the best value sales race in the world – and it is hard to argue with that statement.

Add to the lure of racing in the beautiful Western Cape, and this race looks an exceptionally attractive prospect for any owner or breeder.

The Cape Premier Yearling Sale of 2014 is set to take place from January 23 to 24th, while the March Yearling Sale has been scheduled for 22nd and 23rd.
With such a glittering prize on offer – no doubt both sales will be supported with exceptionally high-quality entries!
