Drakenstein sires’ families shine at Keeneland
Relatives of the Drakenstein Stud based Duke Of Marmalade and Philanthropist have proved popular at the 2014 Keeneland September Sale.
On Tuesday, a colt by leading US sire War Front was knocked down to Coolmore for $1.3 million. The colt, who is out of the A P Indy mare Score, is a grandson of Gr1 winning millionaire Educated Risk (Mr Prospector – Pure Profit). The latter, a half-sister to US Champion and Gr1 Breeders Cup Distaff heroine Inside Information, is a full-sister to Hidden Risk – dam of Philanthropist.
This is the same family as legendary North American champion Native Dancer – a winner of 21 of his 22 outings. A horse with claims to being the most important sire of the 20th century, Native Dancer sired the great sire Raise A Native (sire of Mr Prospector) and is the broodmare sire of Northern Dancer.
Duke Of Marmalade (whose son Hall Of Mirrors contests Saturday’s Group 3 KPMG Enterprise Stakes at Leopardstown) is very closely related to the September Sale’s Lot 549. This Tiznow filly was knocked down to Stonereath Stud for $1.1 million, and is out of a stakes placed half-sister to not only former Cartier Champion Duke Of Marmalade but also former Group 1 Investec Derby hero Ruler Of The World. This is the legendary Lassie Dear family responsible for Horse Of The Year and champion sire A P Indy as well as leading sires Al Mufti, Honor Grades, Lemon Drop Kid, Raja Baba, Sportsworld, Summer Squall and Tiger Ridge, to name a few.
A son of world leading sire Kris S, Philanthropist will be represented by his first local yearlings in 2015, while Duke Of Marmalade is set to cover a high-class book of mares in his first season in South Africa this season.
