Avontuur’s red hot sire Var, who currently leads South Africa’s leading sire of 2yos log, was represented by his eighth individual juvenile winner this season on Tuesday evening.
His son Ribovar, making just his second outing for champion trainer Sean Tarry, proved too strong for ten other juveniles in a maiden juvenile plate over 1160m.
Despite hanging in the closing stages, and racing green throughout, the colt powered home to score a convincing half a length victory at Turffontein.
Bred by the Gold Star Stud, Ribovar was a R550 000 buy from the 2015 March Yearling Sale.
His sire Var (who had a double on Tuesday with his son Buenos Aires also scoring on the day) has some very exciting juveniles representing him this season.
This is clearly demonstrated by the fact that Var has two runners in Saturday’s Listed Storm Bird Stakes for 2yos (He’s A Var, Rivarine) and three runners in the Listed Ruffian Stakes (for 2yo fillies) –notably Exquisite Touch, Hamunaptra and Star Burst Galaxy.
Var, whose yearlings have fetched up to R4 000 000, has 3 lots on offer at the upcoming March Yearling Sale –they include a full sister to the smart Raconteur whose relatives include champion Kochka (Lot 118) and a filly whose dam is a winning half sister to a G2 winner in South America (Lot 234).
The sire of 17 G1 horses and counting, Var also has a strong draft on offer at April’s National Yearling Sale. His 28 lots on offer include a colt out of SA Oaks winner Bedloe’s Island (Lot 7), a colt out of a G1 winner Covenant (Lot 53), a filly out of Cape Fillies Guineas winner Field Flower (Lot87) and a half brother to Equus Champion Rabiya and the hugely promising 3yo Bela-Bela (Lot 230).
