Varsfontein Stud’s successful resident sire Judpot was back in the headlines on Friday, when his talented daughter Double Whammy flew up late to record a stunning victory in the Listed Lady’s Pendant at Fairview.
In the process, the Glen Kotzen trained filly took her earnings to over R600 000 and she has now won or placed in eight of just 12 outings.
Bred by the Shirluck Stud, Double Whammy was one of the best of her generation at three, when she won the G3 Diana Stakes and finished runner up in the G2 Choice Carriers Fillies Championship (to Cold As Ice) and third (to champion Majmu) in the G1 Avontuur Estate Cape Fillies Guineas. Double Whammy was also second last year in the G2 Sceptre Stakes and, to date, has won or placed in five feature races.
The four-year-old, who races for Varsfontein Stud, is a full sister to the useful stakes placed filly Skysign, who finished third in the Listed East Cape Oaks.
The siblings are both by A P Indy’s top class sire son Judpot, whose notable runners this season also include G2 Supreme Cup winner and millionaire Deputy Jud, G2 runner up Three Balloons, and multiple stakes winner Little Genie.
Judpot, a former Equus Outstanding Stallion and sire of former Equus Champion 2yo Filly Along Came Polly, is currently tenth on the General Sires List (according to the NHA).
A half brother to two French classic winners in East Of The Moon and Kingmambo, Judpot has 11 yearlings on offer at the March Yearling Sale:
His draft includes a colt out of G3 performer Valley Of Rubies (Lot 55), a filly whose dam is a three parts sister to champion Argonaut (Lot 223) and a half brother to recent CTS Million Dollar winner Illuminator (Lot 232).
Judpot is also well represented at the National Yearling Sale, where his strong 23 yearlings on sale include a filly out of G2 winner Dance Along (Lot 59), a colt out of blue blooded stakes winner Justthewayyouare (Lot 171), a filly out of G3 runner up Star Of Liberty (Lot 348), a colt out of top class racemare and producer Stormy Appeal (Lot 353), a colt out of G1 Woolavington 2000 winner Viva Maria (Lot 408) and a colt out of G1 SA Fillies Sprint winner Wonderful World (Lot 424).
