First crop of star sprinter on offer at KZN Sale

First crop of star sprinter on offer at KZN Sale
Former top sprinter-miler, Blue Tiger, will be represented by two first crop yearlings at next month’s Suncoast KZN Yearling Sale in Durban.

The Riverton Stud resident stallion’s draft includes a half-sister to the brilliant Potent Power – winner of the Gr1 Tsogo Sun Medallion.
Catalogued as lot 35, this well bred filly, who already has plenty of paddock value to recommend her, is out of the winning Captain Al mare, Solar Galleon.
The latter is a half-sister to two stakes horses – including the Gr3 Godolphin Barb winner Hard Rock.

Named Shades Of Power, this filly has a pedigree packed with speed, and is certainly bred to fly.

Second of the Blue Tiger yearlings on offer at the KZN Sale is lot 84. This filly, beautifully named Ice Blue Moon, is out of a winning half-sister to two stakes fillies, including the five time stakes winner, Noble Century. Her second dam is a half-sister to three stakes winners – including ill-fated Gr1 Fillies Guineas winner Yquem. This is a wonderful family which has produced numerous top-class fillies, including Gr1 SA Fillies Sprint winner Captain’s Gal, Oaks runner up The Derry Air, and  seven time stakes winner Tuvana Silva, to name but a few.

Blue Tiger was a talented and tough racehorse, who raced sound for five seasons, and won over R1 000 000 in prize money.
As precocious as he was durable, Blue Tiger won or placed in no fewer than 19 stakes races. Blue Tiger’s 5 wins came from 1000-1450m, but he stayed well enough to run second, to champion Big City Life, in the 2010 Gr1 Gold Challenge.
His wins included the Gr2 Diadem Stakes, Gr3 Cape Classic and Blue Tiger was placed in no fewer than eight Gr1 races. He twice accounted for legendary champion Pocket Power, while other stars beaten by Blue Tiger included the Equus Champions Big City Life, Mother Russia, and Past Master.  The classy colt was also second, twice, in the Cape’s premier sprint – the Gr1 Cape Flying Championship, and also finished third in the same race, behind champion What A Winter, in 2011.

Blue Tiger was also a top-class 2yo, who ran second to brilliant filly Diana’s Choice in one of the Cape’s top juveniles races – the Gr3 Betting World Nursery.

Like world leading sires Tapit, Bernardini, and Big Shuffle, Blue Tiger is a male line descendant of the great Bold Ruler (sire of champion South African sires Plum Bold and Jungle Cove).   He is also the latest locally bred sire to retire to stud, following in the footsteps of leading stallions Captain Al, Dynasty, Jet Master, Elevation, Model Man and Jay Peg, to name a few.

The striking grey (who shares his colouring with successful former Riverton sires Russian Fox and Jamaico), is from a wonderful female line. He is a half-brother to the brilliant sprinter Rodoille, who won over R600 000 and scored a memorable win in the Gr1 Computaform Sprint of 2001.

Blue Tiger’s half-sister, Compass Point, produced brilliant Equus Champion and Gr1 Cape Guineas winner Pointing North, while his dam, the stakes placed Manuka, is a full-sister to dual Gr1 J&B Met runner up Waitara, and a half-sister to brilliant, Queen’s Plate winning filly Wainui.
