First feature winner for local legend
South Africa’s all time leading money earner, Jay Peg, had his first feature race winner on Saturday, when the Highlands Farm’ bred Olympic Owen landed the Gr3 Protea Stakes.
Olympic Owen’s win came at an opportune time, as it was five years to the day that his sire scored his historic win in the 2008 Dubai Duty Free.
The Protea Stakes has been won by numerous top-class horses over the years, such as Delago Deluxe, Suntagonal, and Palace Line, to name a few, and hopefully Olympic Own can follow in their footsteps.
Olympic Owen’s sire, Jay Peg, has been in tremendous form recently. A colt from his second crop fetched R500 000 at the recent Cape Premier Yearling Sale (Book 2), and it is great to see another locally bred stallion make good.
The winner of 10 races, Jay Peg earned over R40 000 during his racing career. His wins, which came from 1400-2000m, included two of the world’s biggest races – the Gr1 Singapore Airlines International Cup and the Gr1 Dubai Duty Free. Jay Peg broke the track record when defeating a world-class field, and also earned a Timeform Rating of 126.
The grandson of champion sire A P Indy was an Equus Champion at three in South Africa, when his victories included both the Gr1 Cape Guineas and Gr1 Cape Derby.
Jay Peg stands at Klawervlei for a stud fee of R30,000.
