First Grade One winner for Lateral
Exciting young sire Lateral was represented by his first Grade One winner at Greyville on Saturday.
His daughter, Bilateral, shocked a star-studded field to spring a 50-1 upset in the Gr1 Zulu Kingdom Golden Slipper for trainer Weiho Marwing on Vodacom Durban July day. Favourite Alboran Sea (Rock Of Gibraltar) could only finish second, ahead of Pine Princess (Captain Al).
In landing this Gr1 feature, Bilateral, owned and bred by Maine Chance Farms, stamped herself as a potential candidate for title of Equus Champion 2YO Filly at the end of the season.
Bilateral, who is out of the Secret Prospector mare Buccellati, has now won two of her last three outings and earned over R400 000 in prize money.
Following this success, Lateral moved to the top of the first crop sires log in South Africa (by prize money).
To date, the champion son of Singspiel has been represented by six first crop winners, and eight other runners who have finished in the money.
Lateral was a superb racehorse, whose six victories included the Group 1 Gran Criterium (at two), as well as four other pattern races. The horse traces back directly in female line to the great German racemare, Liebeslied – winner of both the German Oaks and 1000 Guineas.
