First Guineas winner for champion
Cheveley Stud’s well performed young sire Argonaut was represented by his first classic winner on Sunday.
It was a good weekend for the former Equus Champion 2YO, who was represented by a winning double at Fairview on Friday.
Argonaut’s talented 3yo son Ernie Or Else, who hails from his sire’s first crop, took his tally to four wins from his last five outings when scoring a facile, three length win in Sunday’s Gr3 Zimbabwean Guineas.
Previously successful in the Guineas trial, Ernie or Else looks well above average, and this colt looks sure to keep his sire in the headlines.
Ernie Or Else, who was bred by Dr Ian Heynes, is out of the unraced Modus Vivendi mare, Merrichhills – whose second dam is US Grade One heroine, Squeak.
His sire, Argonaut, was an exceptional 2YO, who won three of his four outings in his only year of racing. Second to Seventh Rock in the Gr1 Gold Medallion, Argonaut went on to win both the Gr1 Golden Horseshoe and Gr1 Premier’s Champion Stakes, before being exported to Australia. Injury prevented the son of Western Winter from racing again, and he was eventually returned to South Africa to stand at the home of his birth.
His first crop has already produced 18 winners, including Ernie Or Else and the talented, and highly rated, Copybook.
Argonaut’s second crop has made a pleasing start, and include the promising pair of Amarillo Starlight and River God.
The champion is well represented at both the March Yearling Sale and at the Emperors Palace National Yearling Sale.
Argonaut’s March draft of six, includes a half-brother to recent winner Fairy Maker, as well as a half-brother to Gr2 Gold Bowl hero Pacific Warrior.
His National string includes some well bred yearlings, notably a colt out of Gr1 SA Fillies Sprint winner Wonderful World, and a half-brother to smart fillies Follow The Piper and Katy’s Lane.
