First winner for Argonaut
Champion Argonaut was represented by his first winner from his first crop of 2yos on Wednesday. The Alistair Gordon trained Copybook, bred by Mr C Gregson, won a good race at Scottsville, breaking his maiden impressively at just the second time of asking.
His sire Argonaut was an outstanding 2yo, who was the Equus Champion 2yo of 2007
He won three of his four starts, including the Gr1 Golden Horseshoe and Gr1 Premier’s Champion Stakes. In his only other outing, Argonaut ran second to Seventh Rock in the Gr1 Gold Medallion.
Exported to Australia, Argonaut never raced there, but returned home to take up stud duties in 2009.
The handsome chestnut is one of 20 Gr1 winners produced by champion sire Western Winter. The latter has enjoyed a magnificent season in 2012-2013, highlighted by such top-class Gr1 performers as Capetown Noir (Cape Guineas, Cape Derby), What A Winter (Computaform Sprint) and Red Ray (2nd SA Nursery).
Argonaut is a son of outstanding broodmare Aquasarto. The latter is one of just a handful of mares to have produced five stakes winners, with her tally including Finest View (Gr1 SA Fillies Guineas), as well as Argonaut’s talented full brother Simply Salmon.
The champion stands at Cheveley Stud, where his stud fee for last season was R12 000.
