First winner for Lateral
Maine Chance Farms’ resident sire Lateral got off the mark in South Africa when Hollywood Sunset, a filly from his first local crop of 2yos, broke her maiden over 1000m for owners, Newbury Racing.
Hollywood Sunset, bred by Maine Chance, was produced by the unplaced Victory Moon mare, Hollywood Dreams.
Lateral was an outstanding racehorse in Italy and Germany. He was Champion 2YO Colt in Italy in 2005, when unbeaten in three outings. Lateral’s juvenile victories included a score in Italy’s greatest 2yo race – the G1 Gran Criterium, won previously by such legends as Nearco and Ribot.
The bay was later named Champion 3yo in Germany in 2006, and was named Champion Miler in Italy the same year. He retired having won six of his ten outings, with Lateral finishing out of the first three just once in his career.
He is a son of champion racehorse Singspiel, whose nine victories included the Dubai World Cup, Japan Cup, Juddmonte International and Coronation Cup. An equally successful sire, Singspiel is the sire of over 70 stakes winners, including such G1 winners as Moon Ballad (Dubai World Cup), Confidential Lady (French Oaks), Papineau (Gold Cup), Eastern Anthem (Dubai Sheema Classic) and Dar Re Mi (Yorkshire Oaks).
Lateral is out of the stakes winning mare Ligona, and hails from the same family as champion racehorse Literat.
The former champion 2yo is well represented at both the March Yearling Sale and Emperors Palace National Yearling Sale.
Lateral’s six strong draft for the March Sale, to be held at Durbanville later this month, includes a half-sister to recent Gr1 Investec Cape Derby third place getter Arion, as well as a half-brother to top-class filly Hammie’s Hooker.
He has five lots on offer at the National Sale, including a half-brother to Gr1 Champions Cup winner James Jaguar, and a half-sister to Eastern Cape Horse Of The Year, Blaze Of Fire
