G1 glory for Meteor Shower relative
Blazing Speed, a horse very closely related to Hemel ‘N Aarde’s resident sire Meteor Shower, won Sunday’s HK$8 000 000 G1 Stewards Cup over a star studded field.
The Dylan Thomas (Danehill) gelding prevailed in a thrilling finish to win the 1600m by a short head over G1 winner Dan Excel, with third placed finisher, Helene Spirit, beaten a nose into third place.
Further back in fourth place came Oratorio’s Horse Of The Year, Military Attack, with such notable G1 winners as Gold-Fun (sixth) and Glorious Days (seventh) failing to feature in this prestigious event.
By a son of Danehill out of a daughter of Meteor Shower’s dam, Teslemi, Blazing Speed is thus a three parts brother to the Hemel ‘n Aarde Stud resident. The 5yo gelding has now won four times in Hong Kong and has earned over HK$9 000 000, and he could be aimed at feature races in Dubai and Singapore later this year.
Meteor Shower, responsible for an impressive debut winner recently (Power to Succeed), is an exceptionally well bred son of multiple Champion Sire Danehill.
Winner of the Gr3 Chairman’s Cup and six other races, Meteor Shower is one of 347 stakes winners sired by the great Danehill, whose sire sons include Dansili, Redoute’s Choice, Exceed And Excel, Danehill Dancer and Fastnet Rock.
He is out of the exceptionally successful Ogygian mare Teslemi – who also produced the likes of Johan Cruyff and Spartacus to the cover of Danehill.
Johan Cruyff (who sired the high-class performers Johan’s Toy and G1 winner Estejo) won the HK G1 Hong Kong Derby, while Spartacus was an exceptional 2yo who won both the Group One Phoenix Stakes and Group One Gran Criterium. Spartacus was also the Champion 1st Crop Sire in New Zealand.
Meteor Shower currently stands at the Hemel ‘N Aarde Stud.
