Imperial Gold a timely reminder of sire’s quality
The Sean Tarry trained Imperial Gold made an impressive winning debut at Clairwood Park on Wednesday, winning in the style of a horse with a future.
The 2yo colt sauntered home at the first time of asking to win by 2.25 lengths, in open company, over 1200m and looks a horse to keep an eye on.

Bred by James Armitage, Imperial Gold was a R180 000 purchase by Chris Van Niekerk at the 2013 R2 Million Ready to Run Sale. He is out of the Nissr mare Imperial Bird – a stakes placed winner of five. Imperial Bird is also the dam of another talented Goldkeeper colt, in the form of Gold Eagle, who ran third in the Gr2 Umkhomazi Stakes.

Imperial Gold is a son of Goldkeeper, a stallion with a tremendous stud record, which could have been even better had he enjoyed better fertility.

Imperial Gold is the sole runner to date, from Goldkeeper’s 2011 foal crop – in effect giving his sire a 100% strike rate. Imperial Gold is bred on the same Goldkeeper/Nissr cross which produced the stakes winners Battle Maiden (Gr1 Garden Province Stakes), Mist Of Gold (Wolf Power Hcp), and Valdi (BP Guineas).

Goldkeeper, a son of Mr Prospector from the family of champion sires Royal Academy and Storm Cat, was a multiple champion sire in Zimbabwe.
He has done equally well in South Africa, where Goldkeeper has sired such outstanding performers as world class sprinters Cerise Cherry and Tiza, outstanding sprinter Secret Of Victoria and the Gr1 winners Give Me Five and Geepee S. The latter two fillies both won the Gr1 Allan Robertson Fillies Championship – a race also won by Goldkeeper’s champion granddaughter All Is Secret.

Other top-class performers sired by Goldkeeper included the graded stakes winners Kushka, Golden Ivory, Francois Bernardus, Splash Gold and Gold Site. To date, Goldkeeper, a stallion with a superb temperament, has sired 33 stakes winners from 453 foals (despite not getting the best mares around) – which gives him an impressive 7% Stakes winners to foals ratio.

Goldkeeper is also the broodmare sire of this season’s graded stakes winners Reflective Image (Gr2 Sceptre Stakes) and Blaze Of Noon (Gr3 Politician Stakes).
