Wilgerbosdrift’s resident stallion Tiger Ridge has enjoyed a great season this year. In arguably his most successful South African season to date, Tiger Ridge is currently seventh on the general sires list.
At the time of writing, Tiger’s progeny have earned over R5 500 000 this season – and this total could well improve should his brilliant daughter Cherry on the Top win Saturday’s Gr2 Wilgerbosdrift SA Oaks.
Other star performers for Tiger Ridge this season include Wagner (Sansui Summer Cup), Amur Affair (Gr3 Acacia Handicap), as well as Dubai winners Kavanagh and Royal Ridge.
The son of Storm Cat has some well bred yearlings representing him on the 2013 Emperors Palace National Yearling Sale this week.
They include a half-brother to top sprinter Battlestar Express, who is from the immediate family of top SA sire Captain Al, a colt whose third dam is the immortal Fall Aspen, a son of the speedy stakes winner Cantorist, and a filly out of an Oaks placed daughter of leading broodmare sire Fort Wood. This filly is bred on the same Tiger Ridge/Fort Wood nick which produced star filly Cherry On The Top.
However, one of Tiger’s more intriguingly bred yearlings is lot 191. Bred by Highlands, this colt has been named Tiger Rider. His dam, the four time winning Super Singer, is by the great US sire A P Indy – a half-brother to Tiger Ridge himself.
Not only that, but Super Singer (a half-sister to US G1 winner Magnificent Song), is out of a mare by Storm Cat.
This means Tiger Rider is inbred 2 by 3 to both broodmare extraordinaire Weekend Surprise but also to breedshaping sire Storm Cat.
