Irridescence colt fetches $175 000
A colt out of the brilliant South African mare Irridescence fetched $175 000 on day one of the 2013 Keeneland September Yearling Sale yesterday.
The colt, by leading US sire Medaglia D’Oro, was consigned by Paramount Sales (as Agent) and he was purchased by Alekandr Nejenetc.
Irridescence, who was bred by the Winterbachs, was a full sister to the record breaking filly Perfect Promise (Caesour – Meretricious).
During her 19 race career, Irridesence won or placed in 13 races. She won three features in South Africa, including both the Gr1 SA Fillies Classic and Gr1 Woolavington, before being exported.
In the care of champion trainer Mike de Kock, Irridesence truly excelled overseas. She competed in four different countries, winning major features in both Dubai and Hong Kong.
Irridesence’s greatest victory came in the 2006 Queen Elizabeth II Cup at Sha Tin, where she beat a world-class field, including legendary racemare Ouija Board, to capture the 2000m contest.
She also won or placed in five other features overseas, and was second in both the Gr1 Beverly D Stakes (beaten a head) and the Gp1 Falmouth Stakes (beaten 1 length).
At stud, Irridescence has produced the useful winner Exothermic (a son of Empire Maker) and an unraced juvenile Dynaformer colt named Hay Oats and Water.
