J&B Met triumph for World

Mauritzfontein Stud bred and owned Smart Call gave her sire Ideal World a tremendous boost when she ran out a devastating three and a half length win in Saturday’s G1 J&B Met.
In picking up the third G1 win of her career (Smart Call having previously triumphed in the Woolavington 2000 and Maine Chance Farms Paddock Stakes), Smart Call took her earnings to close to R3.5 million.

The four-year-old, who hails from Ideal World’s first crop, has now won or placed in 12 of her 15 outings with Smart Call having now won her last four on the bounce.

A trip to the G1 Breeders’ Cup F&M Turf now looks on the cards for the filly, who accounted for no fewer than seven G1 winners in the Met.

Remarkably, Smart Call has now won or placed in no fewer than eight graded races.

Trained by Alec Laird (who was winning the Met for a second time), Smart Call is out of Good Judgement, a Horse Chestnut (also a Mauritzfontein bred and owned champion) half sister to yet another champion raced by Mauritzfontein –Greys Inn. The latter also played a part in the finish to Saturday’s R2.5 million J& B Met, with his G1 L’Ormarins Queen’s Plate winning son Legal Eagle finishing second.

Ideal World made a superb start to his stud career –with his first crop including seven stakes horses, with other notable runners from this crop including Oaks placed Patchit Up Baby, feature race winner Peep Show and G3 Diana Stakes third Fear Not. Feature race winning sprinter Amazing Strike is another smart performer to have emerged from Ideal World’s first crop of runners.

The son of the recently deceased sire great Kingmambo has also made a pleasing start with his second crop having already produced the G1 filly Persian Rug with the unbeaten Free State another interesting runner to have emerged from this crop.

Out of a Breeders’ Cup winner, and a half brother to Breeders’ Cup runner up Romantica, Ideal World will be strongly represented at this month’s Val De Vie Yearling Sale. His five lots include:

Lot 10 –a filly with a stunning pedigree (and bred on the marvellous Kingmambo/Sadler’s Wells cross), she is out of a full sister to champion Monyela and a three parts sister to Horse Of The Year and successful sire Horse Chestnut.
