July glory for Cheveley Stud
When Legislate was named the official winner of Saturday’s R3.5 million Vodacom Durban July, he provided the cherry on the cake for breeders Cheveley Stud, who have enjoyed a superb season in 2013-2014.
Races won by Cheveley Stud bred horses this season include:
Gr1 Vodacom Durban July
Gr1 Castle Tankard
Gr1 Investec Cape Derby
Gr1 Daily News 2000
Gr2 KRA Guineas
Gr2 OK Grand Challenge
Oaks Trial Stakes
This is a remarkable tally for a farm represented by fewer than 80 runners.
Cheveley have not only enjoyed huge success on racetracks in Southern Africa, but they have also enjoyed commercial success as well.
At the 2014 Emperors Palace National Yearling Sale, the farm sold 11 lots for a gross total of R5.375 million, at an average price of R488 636.
Top priced of the lots sold at the National Sale was a Dynasty colt out of Oceana, who was knocked down to John Freeman for R2 000 000.
Also included among the yearlings sold by Cheveley at the National Sale was a full sister to Legislate (Dynasty – Champers), who was knocked down to Patterson Racing for R550 000.
Cheveley Stud is currently sixth on the national breeders log – despite having been represented by fewer runners than any other stud currently in the top ten!
To date, the farm’s runners have amassed in excess of R8 million in 2013-2014.
