Lammerskraal champion secure Breeders Cup berth
Following his victory in Saturday’s Gr1 L’Ormarins Queen’s Plate, the Lammerskraal Stud bred Capetown Noir has secured a berth for the 2014 Breeders Cup Mile.
This 1600m contest will be run at Santa Anita Park at the end of the year, under the banner of the Breeders Cup World Championship.

A R1 000 000 buy at the 2011 Emperors Palace National Yearling Sale, Capetown Noir has now won eight of his 14 outings and R2 379 450 in prize money. A three time Grade One winner, Capetown Noir won both the Gr1 Cape Premier Yearling Sales Guneas and Investec Cape Derby last season.

Owned by Khaya Stables, Capetown Noir provided trainer Dean Kannemeyer with his third win in the Queen’s Plate.

He is the second Lammerskraal Stud bred son of Western Winter to win the Queen’s Plate (he was preceded by Yard-Arm in 2004).

Western Winter (Gone West – Chilly Hostess), who died last year, was Champion Sire in South Africa three times. His offspring include no fewer than eight Equus Award winners – Argonaut, Bad Girl Runs, Fearless, Ice Cube, Lady Windermere, What A Winter, Winter Solstice, and Yard-Arm.

Western Winter, whose sons have now won the Queen’s Plate on four occasions, is the sire of 76 stakes winners to date.
The great sire, also champion sire of 2yos three times, may be gone, but he still has a good chance of further gilding his already golden stud record.
His current crop of 2yos include a half-brother to star filly In The Fast Lane (2nd in Saturday’s Gr1 Maine Chance Farms Paddock Stakes), a filly out of unbeaten champion Private Reserve, and a half-sister to Charity Mile winner Alderry.

Western Winter’s current crop of yearlings include a half-brother to the Fillies Guineas winners Captain’s Lover and Ebony Flyer, a half-sister to G1 winner Viva Maria, as well as a daughter of the high-class racemare, She’s On Fire.

Capetown Noir is out of the Fort Wood Akinfeet – who was South Africa’s Equus Broodmare Of The Year in 2013.

Akinfeet, a daughter of former Cape Fillies Guineas winner Dance Every Dance, is also the dam of Gr3 winner Across The Ice, Maxixe (a stakes placed winner of five), and impressive debut winner Dubai Dancing.

She is currently in foal to Equus Champion Sprinter, What A Winter (by Western Winter).
