Maine Chance Farms’ outstanding stallion Vercingetorix came up with his 29th stakes winner when his consistent daughter Phedra won the Listed Milkwood Stakes (1000m) at Fairview on Friday afternoon. Trained by Sharon Kotzen, four-year-old Phedra had finished second two starts back in the Listed East Cape Sprint Cup before finishing fifth last time out in the Fairview Flying Five.
The Maine Chance Farms bred filly picked up her biggest win thus far when Phedra claimed Friday’s Listed feature. Under an inform Louis Mxothwa, Phedra settled just off a quick pace early on, before launching her challenge with 250m left to run.
Under a strong ride from Mxothwa, Phedra produced a sustained finish which saw her edge out the front running Tipsy Tina and win by half a length.
Now a seven-time winner from 25 starts, Phedra took her earnings to R541 151 in total.
Phedra, who is out of the Trippi mare Pritti, is bred on very similar lines to the Vercingetorix sired G1 Jonsson Workwear Cape Derby winner Pomp And Power as well as to this season’s G2 World Sports Betting Fillies Guineas winner Peach Daiquiri.
Former Equus Champion, and G1 Jebel Hatta hero, Vercingetorix, is having another excellent season with the Silvano son’s progeny shining both on the racetrack and in the sales ring. Phedra and Peach Daiquiri aside, Vercingetorix has also been responsible for such stakes winners as Bereave, Cape Eagle, Cousin Casey, Rascallion and Mrs Geriatrix, to name a few, this season.
Vercingetorix has no fewer than six of his progeny nominated for the 2023 G1 Hollywoodbets Durban July.
