Avontuur Thoroughbred Farm’s leading sire Var has enjoyed a great run of success over the past few weeks –even by his high standards, and the lightning fast son of Forest Wildcat, who had a treble of two-year-old winners the previous Saturday, thoroughly dominated proceedings in the Listed Lady’s Pendant run over 1200m at Fairview on Friday.
Var daughters Star Burst Galaxy and Our Destiny ran 1-2 in the R150 000 Lady’s Pendant, with Star Burst Galaxy powering clear under the Avontuur sponsored hoop Callan Murray to register a 2.25 length first feature race win at the expense of former G1 WSB Cape Fillies Guineas runner up Our Destiny.
Trained by Tara Laing, and bred by Dr Ian Heyns, Star Burst Galaxy took her tally to seven wins from just 20 outings, with the consistent four-year-old having just a single unplaced run to her credit.
Star Burst Galaxy, a second stakes winner produced by the Doowaley mare Majestic Star, had previously registered placings in such Listed races as the Breeders Guineas, Lady’s Bracelet, Ruffian Stakes and Devon Air Stakes.
In the process, Star Burst Galaxy became the 40th individual stakes winner for Var –South Africa’s Champion Sire of Two-Year-Olds in 2016-2017.
She completed a good week for her sire, whose Roquebrune won the Kimberley 1400 on Monday.
Var, who is once again heading the 2YO Sires List, also looks on course to enjoy success as a broodmare sire, with his daughters having already produced such notable stakes winners as She’s A Giver, Zen Arcade, and Mambonick –as well as the highly rated Miss Frankel.
He has three lots on the 2018 April Yearling Sale.
