Reigning champion sire Silvano, who has made a scintillating start to the 2017-2018 season, was represented by his 74th individual stakes winner on Saturday when his son Strathdon won the Listed Woolavington Handicap at Durbanville.
One of three winners on the day for trainer Justin Snaith, the Alec Foster bred Strathdon picked up the first black type win of his career with a two and a quarter length romp in the 2400m contest.
Four-year-old Strathdon, who is out of the Western Winter mare Wintersweet, has now won three in a row, and five of his 12 outings overall. Saturday’s feature race win pushed his earnings to over R350 000.
Strathdon, bred on the same Silvano/Western Winter cross as classic winners Black Arthur and Wind Chill, is the second Woolavington Handicap winner for his sire, following Hot Ticket.
It was another weekend to remember for dual South African champion sire Silvano, who was represented by no fewer than five winners between Friday and Sunday. His tally included Summer Cup hope Girl On The Run, who scored over 1950m at Turffontein on Saturday, and big margin winner Run Rhino Run.
The former, victorious in last season’s G3 Yellowwood Handicap, accounted for fellow Summer Cup entries Crowd Pleaser and Pagoda when landing a pinnacle stakes and the Maine Chance Farms bred and owned five-year-old has now banked more than R600 000 in prize money.
Girl On The Run is one of five Silvano sired horses entered for November’s G1 Sansui Summer Cup.
Other winners for Silvano this weekend included the Cheveley Stud bred and owned Tiffindell and Friday night winner Viento.
Silvano, the sire of 20 G1 winners and seven Equus Champions, will be represented by the unbeaten Billy Silver and Tower Of Wisdom in Saturday’s G3 Cape Classic.
The champion has five lots on November’s CTS Ready To Run Sale.
