Drakenstein Stud’s Cartier Champion and successful sire Duke Of Marmalade comes from one of the very best families in the stud book, and the champion son of Danehill received yet another boost to his pedigree page recently.
Promising two-year-old filly Sweet Melania (by American Pharoah) made it win number two from only five starts when romping home to a five and a half length win in the G2 JPMorgan Chase Jessamine Stakes at Keeneland on Wednesday.
Trained by Todd Pletcher, Sweet Melania earned a free berth to the Juvenile Fillies Turf (G1) at Santa Anita on November 1 with her stylish win on Wednesday.
The filly’s fourth dam, the stakes placed Alydar mare Lassie’s Lady, is the second dam of five time G1 winner Duke Of Marmalade, G1 Investec Derby winner and promising sire Ruler Of The World, and recent Irish G3 winner Norway –who was third in this year’s G1 Dubai Duty Free Irish Derby.
Duke Of Marmalade himself had a smart looking winner at Durbanville on Wednesday when his promising 3yo daughter Larentina flew up late to score over 1400m. The well regarded sophomore has now won two in a row and is yet to finish out of the money in four starts.
The Eric Sands trained Larentina, who is inbred to Duke Of Marmalade’s fourth dam Gay Missile, was bred by the Sandown Stud.
